Recall is an essential skill for every dog (and other pets, too!). It is also a very expensive behavior- that is, it is hard work for your dog. Leaving behind something exciting- like a good smell, a swimming hole, a squirrel chase, or a new friend at the park- and coming aaaaaaaall the way back to you is a whole lot to ask of your off-leash dog!
In order to achieve a reliable and consistent recall, it is important to reward your dog massively whenever they do recall. That reward could be an extra tasty treat such as bacon, liver, or cheese; it could be the opportunity to chase you and get silly; or it could be a game of tug with their favorite toy. Figure out what kind of reward is most exciting to your dog, and use that for rewarding recall.
Remember to practice recall every day- first in easy, low distraction environments, and then gradually in more challenging places. Reward every time. And always invest in your relationship with your dog through positive interactions- even when your dog takes a bit of time coming back to you.
Lastly, be a responsible dog handler and only let your dog off-leash in designated areas.
